It seems like the new year has brought much bad news for tech companies. I’ve constantly been reading press releases and news stories about job cuts and layoffs happening left and right in the technology world. People that thought technology was recession-proof have now been proven very wrong. According to Layoff Tracker (8/27/08 – 1/17/09), 347 companies have made layoffs and over 140,000 employees have received the bad news. Below I’ve made a list of some of the more notable tech companies that have been hit, and how many employees that have been cut.

AMD – 1,100

Google – 100

Motorola – 4,000

Seagate – 800

Dell – 1,900

Lenovo – 2,500

Logitech – 500

Electronic Arts – 400

Western Digital – 2,500

These are just a fraction of all the companies. To see an up-to-date list, visit TechCrunch.

Well my friends at ComputerForum.com have been asking for a tech news/product reviews type area for quite some time now. The most recent discussion was here, where a poll was created about whether we should release our own magazine. Apart from the massive resources that would require, well quite frankly, print media is on the way out. By the time something appears in a print magazine, it is already old news, it has been discussed in technology blogs well in advance. TechZine is short for Technology Magazine, it will focus on all tech gadgets with a particular emphasis towards computers. There will be no blog comments, instead each post will link to a thread at computerforum.com where the details of the blog post can be discussed at length in the forum.

I would like to point out that this is not meant to be some highly professional technology news site, unlike other sites out there, this will remain a fairly casual, informal type blog, by the members of computerforum.com and for the members of computerforum.com So any members who would like to contribute with a post, are more than welcome to, but whether they appear on this site will be subject to the approval of the techzine blog administrators, of who I obviously will be one. Somebody gets a new game or gadget and wants to review it, and get a high profile exposure to your fellow members, your posts are welcome.

This post can be discussed further here
